Advanced Natural Language Processing

Natural language processing (NLP) models human language with computers, tackling a variety of tasks from automatic translation to interactive question answering. CS 769 is a research-driven graduate-level course aimed at students who are interested in doing cutting-edge research in the field. We’ll learn about fundamental tasks and methods in NLP, as well as take occasional deep dives into researchers’ recent papers. The class culminates in a final project in which students design and implement a paper on a topic of their choosing.

Logistics

Project deliverables will be submitted via Canvas, while in-class assignments are graded on Gradescope.

Credits

Course materials and lecture topics are inspired by previous iterations of UW-Madison’s CS 769, Berkeley’s CS 288, Stanford’s CS 224N, Stanford’s CS224U, Stanford’s CS 124, Princeton’s COS 484, Columbia’s COMS 4705, and CMU LTI’s 11-711. Of these courses, Lucy has previously taken versions of Berkeley’s CS 288 and Stanford’s CS 224N, CS224U, and CS124, as a student herself long ago. Many of these courses may have borrowed their materials from other courses, and so the acknowledgement list here may not be comprehensive.
